Although using the internet today is taken for granted by most Portuguese, many do not know how to protect their personal data.
In fact, according to Eurobarometer 2015, 55% of Portuguese internet users are unaware of its risks. For that reason, Google Portugal and the Portuguese consumer rights association DECO have come together to promote internet security and ensure the adoption of safer behaviour and the protection of personal data.
The “Net Viva e Segura” initiative set up by the two organisations has created a website where you can find rules and tips on how to use the internet safely. These tips range from how to set up your smartphone to ensure secure online browsing to choosing passwords and advice on online transaction and shopping.
Besides the launch of the website, the Net Viva e Segura project is also holding NETtalks – training sessions – in Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and Évora (the first has already taken place) and a competition for young people attending the conferences in which they are encouraged to make a video about what they have learnt. The NETtalks last from 60 to 90 minutes and consist of knowledge sharing, debates and reflection on the digital world.
